11:26 am - Christmas 2009

It's been over a week since I last updated this blog. That week was extremely busy. Today is the first day I've really had to just relax and take it easy (aside from Christmas Day, obviously, but it didn't seem right to post anything here on that day).

So this entry will be yet another really long photo post, perhaps longer than most! )

11:51 pm - Snow day!

A few days ago was the Disney Store Christmas party. Jenny was closing manager that night, and as they're getting ready to leave the store, she mentions in passing that she's hoping that Claire (another manager) remembers to bring her camera. El (the store manager) asks, 'Don't you have a camera?' Jenny informs her that ours went missing some months ago. El runs to the office and comes back with two cameras. 'Pick one.'

It seems that well over six months ago, these two cameras were left at the store. As they'd been there for so long, El was just going to throw them away, but since Jenny needed one... and then she said, 'I don't know if the batteries are any good, so take both.' You know what this means...

It means there will be more long photo posts! )

Tomorrow is Castleford. Expect more photos.

01:23 am - Castleford Approaches

Yesterday, I went to pick up the costumes. I'll be wearing a proper Victorian coat with ruffled shirt, waistcoat, and cravat, not to mention the top hat.

I am of course referring to the Victorian Market in Castleford. I realise I haven't mentioned this in almost a month, but I've been hard at work on my days off researching recipes and reserving costumes. I've prepared several foods to display at this market; for the Romans, I'll be sticking with their flatbread (though I'll be using white spelt instead of wholegrain this time), bulgar wheat puls (made nicer with onions and some bacon and herbs), and lentil stew. For the Celts, I'm going to prepare Blaanda bread, a course mealy sort of unleavened mixture of oats and barley flour held together with milk and butter. I'll also be preparing some plain chunks of lamb, since meat was a pretty major part of the Celtic diet (as opposed to the Romans, who didn't eat a lot of meat).

I have also picked up an assistant. Her name is Tori, and she's an interesting young lady. She was asked to drive, since I have no license, but she'll be able to help out with things as well. She's renting a costume as well; she chose a nice little dark blue two-piece Victorian dress with white pinstripes.

Don't worry, there will be pictures.

Anyway, I spent most of today preparing the equipment for the trip on Saturday. I also experimented with the recipes so I'd be prepared for the event. Jenny doesn't like the blaanda bread; she says it tastes like she's eating horse food. The white spelt flatbread isn't bad, though; it kind of reminds me of the really thick flour tortillas from Ted's Escondido.
